E3 Expo Showcases Latest in Gaming
June 7, 2011

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, is now underway in Los Angeles. Video game enthusiasts are keeping a close eye on on E3 coverage to see what new games, consoles, and other surprises will be announced at this huge annual event. All of the major manufacturers of game hardware and software have displays at the convention and usually make major announcements about new, upgraded products during the expo's three day duration.

Gaming has come a long way since the days of skee ball, pinball machines, and shooting galleries, the earliest examples of non-computerized arcade games. Pong came on the scene in 1972, leading to the rise of many arcade video game favorites, like Pacman, Galaga, and Space Invaders. Atari allowed gamers to play their favorite titles at home for the first time in 1976. Many consoles have risen and fallen in the intervening years, and gameplay becomes more sophisticated every day, and the graphics become more and more realistic.

But no matter how advanced home console and computer games become, there's still a certain appeal to dropping a coin (or two or four) into a slot on a big machine and doing your best to make that small entertainment investment worthwhile. There are no redos or cheat codes, adding an extra challenge to arcade gameplay. A big, tall arcade game adds an extra touch of retro fun to a family rec room or man cave.
